60 Years of Dispossession, 60 Years Closer to Return

Toronto – as Israel and its supporters celebrate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel, the Canadian Arab Federation (CAF), alongside millions of displaced Palestinians will be commemorating the loss of their indigenous homeland and pledging to work for the implementation of the right of return of all Palestinian refugees.

In 1948, nearly one million Palestinians were brutally forced from their homes by Zionist militias in order to create a purely Jewish state in Palestine. Since then the number of Palestinian refugees has grown to 7.3 million, the largest refugee population in the world. Israel’s military occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1967, has resulted in thousands of Palestinian deaths, tens of thousands of Palestinians jailed, 450 thousand
Jewish colonists illegally implanted in the West Bank and Jerusalem, poverty, and a slow genocide of the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza.

The image of ‘land’ is a dominant motif of Palestinian art and culture for hundreds of years. The fact that Palestinians are denied the Right of Return to their homeland, although guaranteed by the United Nations, deals a powerful blow to international law and justice. Despite these challenges which may appear to be presently impossible to overcome, CAF remains unconditionally supportive of the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland, free of occupation and discrimination.

“CAF applauds the growing isolation of Israel through the boycott and divestment campaign that has been embraced by many labour, academic and religious organizations in Canada and abroad, and the growing realization among youth and students that Israeli practices and policies mirror those of Apartheid South Africa. CAF believes that popular awareness of the plight of Palestinians will bring the day when the Israeli occupation
will end and the refugees will return to Palestine”, said Khaled Mouammar, CAF National President.
